2019 Band of America Grand National Championships Montage.(Indianapolis, IN) — The 2019 Bands of America (BOA) Grand National Championships concluded on Saturday, November 16, with Yamaha leading how National Presenting Sponsor of the event, The Grand National online, a relationship that the firm has been honored to maintain for over two decades.
As a portion of the organization’s mission to enable music teachers to construct strong programs through professional development, program advocacy and accessibility to resources, Yamaha engaged in the Future Music Educator roundtable to support and promote new music teachers entering the profession. To bolster participants’ experiences in the event, Yamaha welcomed attendees to its booth to experience Yamaha SILENT instruments, a lineup of innovative instruments that enable players to practice silently using cans. The Championships, held November 14-16 in Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, brought over 12,000 participants, representing over 90 high school bands from over 20 states, also thousands of live audiences and people watching the events via live stream. The participating bands competed in preliminary contests last Thursday and Friday, with each group shouted to become one of the best 38 bands to advance to Saturday’s semi-finals. The Grand National online.The best 12 rings from semi-finals then competed at the Finals Saturday night, in which their performances were judged by a panel of nationally-recognized music teachers and marching group experts. In the end, Mike Howard, band director, directed Vandegrift Band & Vision Dance Company from Vandegrift High School in Austin, Texas into the Grand National Champion prize.
Jay Webb, manager, and Matt Harloff, assistant manager and Yamaha Performing Artist, directed the Avon High School band from Avon, Indiana to a silver medal finish. One of the winning ensembles, Carmel High School, headed by Yamaha Master Educator and director of bands, Michael Pote, as well as Yamaha Performing Artist and director of percussion, Matthew Black, gave an outstanding performance in the Finals, as did The Woodlands High School, led by Ridge and Percussion Director and Yamaha Performing Artist Andrew Salmon.
